In the mornings, before work

I successfully ran five miles at my half marathon goal pace! I came in at 44 minutes for my run this morning before work and I actually didn't feel like death despite being relatively speedy (for my standards.)

Do I think a sub two hour race is going to happen two weeks from now? No. I highly doubt I will run a sub two in my 3rd half marathon ever but I think I can break 2:07 and PR if I really want it that day. Other factors will be course, fueling and weather so we'll play it by ear.

Lately I have been loving speed work and not loving long easy runs. I want to go faster! </end random thought>

Other notes: Hats. OK, All my hats give me a ridiculous line on my forehead that take an hour to fade despite wearing them loose in order to avoid forehead dent embarrassment. I like to get in runs before work so walking around the office with a line on my head makes me feel extra lame. Any suggestions for a hat that doesn't do this? I already have tried Lululemon and Nike hats.

Let's be honest, going to Vegas tomorrow I don't expect to get anymore workouts in this week. I should run nine miles tomorrow but I am super booked up until my flight leaves. I have an alumni event for my university today, need to do laundry, pack and get into work early so I can leave early. Phew.

Monday: 3 mile lunch run
Tuesday: one hour full body conditioning in AM and one hour yoga PM
Wednesday: 15 min core in the am then rest in PM (so sore from Tuesday conditioning
Thursday: 5 miles at goal half marathon pace
Friday: Vegas!!!

Holy moly, I am running a marathon.

Saturday on my long run something struck me as I ran passed a woman in a 26.2 shirt; that's going to be ME!

Looking at my training schedule I know this is going to be A LOT of work and dedication. I am thinking about joining a running club so I have company on those 18 milers, 20 milers, etc. This is going to take a lot of support for someone like me who can sometimes decide that 7.5 miles is as good as 8. I think it might take a village to raise a marathoner? No? OK, but it may take a little push from behind to really get through those long runs.

This is something I still have a little time to think about but it's seeming like a good option.

My favorite little cheesy motto. I usually hate these things but I love this one
This week workout wrap up!

Monday: Two speedy miles just because
Tuesday: Three miles of fartleks
Wednesday: Rest
Thursday: Three miles
Friday: Rest
Saturday: 10 miles
Sunday: Yoga

I got a massage Saturday for the first time since April. It was delightful and my left calf with the terrible knot is all better now. Ahhh.

Can we talk about the Oscars for a minute? I like, Anne Hathaway but really? She won? I think I just loved Silver Linings Playbook way more than Les Mis. C'est le vie, I guess...

Also,  I am going to Vegas Friday night for a bachelorette party. It's the first one I have ever been to. I can't wait to hang out with some lovely ladies and get my dance on.

Happy Monday, friends!

To 26.2 or not?

I keep toying with the idea of running a full marathon this year. I'll be 26 in just over five months and I can't think of a better way to celebrate than by running at mile for each year I have been on this planet. (Except for maybe eat 26 chocolate croissants for 26 days in Paris.)

Also, the marathon I am looking at happens to be in Portland (where my parent's live) and four days after my mom's birthday anddddd one of my favorite people on earth is also running it.Not only is she always an inspiration to me but she's the reason I signed up to run my first 5k. So I'ld love to hug her when we cross the finish line.
The problem is I keep thinking about how hard 26 miles is going to be. I like a challenge, but damn...

I REGISTERED FOR A FULL MARATHON!!!

AHHHHHHH. 26.2 on 10.6 in Portland.

In the meantime I resume to my half training schedule. I am so nervous/excited/afraid/stoked.

Long Weekends

Ahhh, the three day weekend. After a crazy week last week I really needed a break, however I didn't find myself relaxing until I woke up at 7am on Saturday feeling completely spent but knowing I needed to get an eight miler in.

Last week friends were in town visiting and I also made other plans with co-workers and other friends. Add getting a treatment done by my doctor resulting in a swollen foot, I had to forgo any workouts until Saturday.

So my schedule looked like this: Monday: Strength, Tuesday: Three Miles, Wednesday: Rest, Thursday: Rest, Friday: Rest, Saturday: Eight Miles and strength, Sunday: Yoga.

Eleven miles, blah. Need to get serious this week.

After my eight and workout Saturday I spend the day in bed feeling exhausted. Luckily after more sleep I woke up and felt refreshed and took the rest of the weekend easy with a dinner date with two girlfriends, in bed by 10pm, followed by a Sunday in Napa eating a lot with J's sister in law and niece, followed by lots of documentary watching (Have you seen any of the Up movies? I watched three of them last night) followed by bed again by 10. Ahhh.

Today is devoted to errands and the art museum and making some chile verde.

Happy President's Day, friends!

Hi Blog! It's me your old friend Kate. I have been busy the last week trying to get time in with J before he left for a few weeks. I have also had guests in town.

What's new you ask? Not too much. Last week I only ran seven of my 11 miles scheduled. I did get in a swim, yoga and a strength day though.

Monday: (day after my half) yoga
Tuesday: Two miles on the dreadmill and strength
Wednesday: Swim (45 minutes not sure how many meters I got in)
Thursday: Skipped my easy three and had a cocktail with J at the Big Four. Opps
Friday: Rest
Saturday: Five miles
Sunday: Skipped yoga had guests in town. Walked about 3 miles? (I know, I know it doesn't count)

We ended up eating way too much last weekend. I tried Citizen Band on Friday (awesome Mac n' Cheese) a Peebles donut post my five miler Saturday, and we had a romantic double date at SPQR which was mind blowingly delicious. I also had cocktails at Trick Dog and Blood Hound. Sunday I visited the Castro and Haight and picked up some new records. Dinosaur Jr.'s Bug for J and Bill Evans for me.

In the Haight record shopping Sunday.
Jess says I need a Kindle cause I have blowing through books and we have no more room for them. Hmmm. Just finished some Michael Pollan and The New York Time's 36 Hours US and Canada collection from my lovely BF. It's one of my favorite sections of the paper.

Gorgeous

This week I plan to do all the workouts on my schedule and enjoy a little quiet time and catch up with friends. Looking forward to my warm sunny week. It's official. I don't miss winter at ALL. Happy Tuesday, friends.

From my run this morning. Ahhhh.

An 18 minute PR

I ran my second half marathon yesterday. It was the most perfect morning for a race and the whole thing went really smooth and fast.

I started the morning with my pre-race oatmeal which never fails my stomach and got to the race in the perfect amount of time to hit up the bathroom line and pick up my bib. Before I knew it we were off.

Finishing the race. I am the one in purple still running (Why is that lady walking across the finish?)
To be honest I went out way too fast and probably ran a 27 minutes 5K to start off the race. I felt amazing until mile seven and a half when the course I ran went out along the great highway and was flat and long out and back for the next five miles. It was boring and played mind tricks on me and I had a hard time keeping my pace. I realized I don't like flat straight running courses. I love hills (not crazy steep ones but just rolling ones) because I can use different muscles and take a break on the downhills.

I was glad I banked some time because I slowed down a crazy amount after mile eight. In fact I know this next race I want to attempt a negative split and save more energy for the end. My next few weeks of training need to focus on speed in the last three to four miles.

Oh! My finish time was 2:07:35. Two minutes faster than my goal and 18 minutes faster than my previous half marathon. Wow! I am very excited to start training for Shamrock and I think a sub two is somewhere in my future. And big thank you to my lovely boyfriend for waiting around for two hours and holding all my stuff while I ran. He's the best.

Me and Lauren post race.

52 miles

I ran 52 miles in January despite the stomach flu and missing a couple runs I had planned.

Now that it's time for my race I thought I'd start a new training plan for my next half in six weeks. Having this ready will help me avoid taking too much rest after Kaiser. Here's what I came up with:

Week Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri Sat Sun
Feb 4 - 10 yoga 2 easy rest 3 easy rest 6 yoga
Feb 11 - 17 strength 3 easy hills 4 easy rest 8 yoga
Feb 18 - 24 strength 3 easy speed 4 easy rest 11 yoga
Feb 25 - Mar 3 strength 3 easy hills 4 easy 9 rest rest
Mar 4 - 10 strength 3 easy speed 4 easy rest 10 yoga
Mar 11 - 17 strength 3 easy rest 3 easy yoga rest RACE
